Renewable Energy General Counsel Recruiter

We help developers, power producers and clean technology companies hire general counsel who protect the business while keeping deals, permits and financings moving.

Karpel Associates recruits General Counsels for renewable energy companies across the US, spanning project developers, power producers, utilities and equipment makers. As a renewable energy general counsel recruiter, we look for lawyers who have negotiated the contracts that make projects bankable and who can run a legal function without slowing the business down.

What does a General Counsel handle for a clean power developer or producer?

Every clean power project rests on a stack of agreements, and the General Counsel is responsible for all of them holding together. Offtake comes first: power purchase agreements with utilities, corporate buyers or hedge counterparties set the revenue that lenders will underwrite. Interconnection agreements decide when a project can deliver power and what upgrades it must pay for. Land leases, easements and title work determine whether the site can be built on at all.

Financing adds another layer. Tax equity partnerships, tax credit transfer agreements, construction loans and term debt each come with lengthy documents and tight closing dates. The General Counsel coordinates outside counsel on these transactions, negotiates the points that matter and keeps the company from accepting terms it cannot live with later.

Regulatory work rounds out the role. Companies selling into wholesale markets or owning transmission assets deal with federal and state energy regulators, and project permits involve local, state and environmental agencies. When disputes arise with contractors, landowners or offtakers, the General Counsel decides whether to settle or fight.

The right legal leader looks different depending on what the company owns and sells. We use this view early in a search to agree on emphasis.

Business model Agreements that dominate the workload Background we prioritize
Utility-scale developer Land, interconnection, offtake and project sale documents Development transactions and permitting disputes
Independent power producer Financing, O&M, asset management and refinancing papers Project finance and portfolio operations
Distributed generation or community solar Customer contracts, state program rules and fund documents Consumer contracts and state regulatory experience
Grid and transmission business Tariffs, rate filings and commission proceedings Energy regulatory practice
Equipment or technology supplier Supply agreements, warranties and intellectual property Commercial contracting and product liability

Wind and transmission companies, for example, lean heavily on regulatory and land expertise, so for those searches we also tap our grid and utility executive contacts.

How do we evaluate renewable energy General Counsel candidates?

Finalists we bring forward each clear a 90% bar on the skill profile you set. For legal leaders, our interviews focus on four areas.

Depth on the deals that drive value

We ask which PPAs, financings and acquisitions the candidate personally negotiated, what the hardest open points were and how they were resolved. Lawyers who have sat at the table speak about tradeoffs, not only about clauses.

Judgment about risk

A good General Counsel says yes more often than outsiders expect, with protections in place. We probe how candidates weigh legal risk against commercial pressure, and when they have pushed back.

Managing outside counsel

Much of the work still goes to law firms. Strong candidates scope matters tightly, hold firms to budgets and know which tasks belong in-house.

Fit with the commercial team

Legal works daily with development and finance. The best hires partner well with a development chief who sources new projects and help close deals rather than simply review them.

A Haas MBA graduate, Stacey Karpel has led our firm as President and recruited executives for 20+ years, devoting the latest 15+ entirely to renewables. We keep an in-house roster listing 40,000+ people across the sector, and Stacey's LinkedIn reach exceeds 30,000 connections.

Top energy lawyers seldom scan listings. Across every function, 80% of the people we place were never on a job board, so our approach is a direct, private call, and your company stays unnamed until a lawyer wants to hear more. We usually staff senior legal roles through our retained search for senior clean energy hires, and benchmarking data on legal pay comes with every search so the package you present is realistic.

Our average search finishes before day 28. Clients see 98% of their offers accepted, while 94% of our placements stay put.

Share the deals ahead of you, the outside firms you use today and the gaps you feel in legal coverage. We will describe the available talent and the search approach we recommend. Begin your General Counsel search with Karpel Associates.

Hiring a General Counsel: FAQs

Should our first in-house lawyer be a General Counsel?

Often yes, if the company is closing financings or signing offtake contracts on a regular basis. A senior lawyer can manage outside firms well and cut legal spend. A smaller company with occasional deals may start with a deputy-level hire and grow into the title.

Do candidates need law firm experience or in-house experience?

The strongest candidates usually have both. Firm training builds drafting skill and deal volume, while in-house time teaches business judgment and prioritization. We weigh each against the role you actually need filled.

Can a General Counsel also cover regulatory and compliance work?

Many do, especially at companies selling power into organized markets or owning transmission assets. We confirm early whether the role needs deep regulatory experience or only working knowledge. That one decision changes the candidate pool a great deal.

Is a legal search kept confidential?

We contact candidates on a no-names basis until they signal real interest. Legal leaders are used to discretion and expect it from a search firm. Your current team learns about the search only when you choose to tell them.
