As a renewable energy CFO recruiter, Karpel Associates finds chief financial officers for solar developers, wind owners, battery storage firms, utilities and clean fuels producers throughout the United States. We work for the hiring company. If your next finance chief has to raise capital, close project deals and lead a growing team, we can find that person.
What are the responsibilities of a renewable energy CFO?
Elsewhere, the CFO mostly reports on results. In this sector the CFO also builds the funding that lets projects exist at all. Each solar farm, wind project or battery installation is usually financed on its own, through some mix of sponsor equity, tax equity, construction loans, term debt and, since the Inflation Reduction Act, the sale of transferable tax credits. The finance chief chooses which structure fits each asset, negotiates with the banks and investors across the table, and protects the corporate balance sheet while many project companies sit beneath it.
The job also covers the familiar duties: budgeting, audit, treasury, tax compliance, FP&A and board reporting. What makes the seat hard to fill is that few people are strong at both halves. A controller-style leader may struggle with a partnership flip, while a pure deal specialist may never have run a monthly close or managed a finance staff.
When is the right time to hire a CFO for a renewables business?
The right profile depends heavily on where the business sits today. We use a version of this table in discovery calls to agree on what the hire must achieve.
| Company stage | Typical finance situation | What the CFO must deliver |
|---|---|---|
| Early-stage developer | Small pipeline funded by founders or a venture round | Development capital, a financing plan for first projects, investor-ready models |
| Growth platform | Several projects heading to construction together | Tax equity and lender relationships, credit transfer deals, a scalable finance team |
| Operating IPP | A portfolio of assets earning revenue | Refinancing, asset-level reporting, cost control and distribution discipline |
| Manufacturer or equipment supplier | Factory buildout and working capital pressure | Capex planning, supply contracts, incentive compliance and margin management |
| Company preparing for a sale or IPO | A transaction on the horizon | Audit readiness, a clean data room and credibility with buyers or public investors |
Some companies need a seasoned finance leader for only a few months, for example during a recapitalization or after a sudden departure. For those gaps, an interim CFO placement gives you a proven finance executive while the long-term recruit is found.
How to evaluate renewable energy CFO candidates
Each finalist we introduce clears a 90% match against the competencies you set with us. For most CFO roles, that skillset includes the following.
Hands-on project finance experience
Ask how many deals the candidate personally led to financial close, which structures they used and who sat on the other side. Experience with partnership flips, sale-leasebacks, hybrid tax equity and credit transfer agreements matters more than an impressive list of titles.
Judgment about policy and tax risk
Project economics move with federal and state policy. A strong CFO can explain how domestic content rules, prevailing wage requirements or energy community adders change an asset's value, and can model downside cases before a lender asks for them.
Operational cost discipline
Capital is only half the job. We favor candidates who have tightened spending without slowing growth. A finance chief we recruited for a $100M company identified $1M in savings during the first half year on the job, and results like that are what we dig into during interviews.
Credibility with boards and investors
The CFO is often the executive investors trust most. We assess how candidates have handled tough board conversations, missed forecasts and fundraising processes that did not go to plan.
Sector focus matters as well. A finance chief at a storage company dealing with merchant revenue and capacity markets faces different questions than one running a contracted solar portfolio, which is why we also source from our storage industry candidate network.
How Karpel Associates runs a CFO search
Finance leaders who can do this work are rarely job hunting. Eighty percent of our placed executives had never been listed on any job board, so outreach is direct and personal.
